Mail Forwarding

How mail forwarding from a Singapore address works

Mail forwarding is the onward dispatch of post already received at your Singapore address to another address you nominate, in Singapore or overseas. You choose which items travel; forwarding is chargeable, and the amount is quoted to you before anything is sent.

Forwarding begins after the item has arrived

It is worth being precise about the order, because the word “forwarding” is used loosely elsewhere. Nothing is redirected before it reaches us. An item is delivered to the Tanjong Pagar premises, received by a person, matched to your account, photographed and logged, and you are notified. Only then does the question of forwarding arise.

That order is what makes the record useful. Every item has a date of receipt before it has a date of dispatch, so the two can be told apart afterwards.

Choosing what travels

Forwarding everything is rarely the right instinct. A good deal of business post is advertising, and sending it around the world is an expensive way to throw it away. You can decide item by item, or set a rule and stop thinking about it.

Per item
You look at what has arrived and forward only what is worth the journey. Most advertising never leaves the building. This is the default, and it is usually the cheaper habit.
Standing instruction
Everything addressed to your company is forwarded as it arrives, without being asked for each time. Suits a company with nobody in Singapore to collect. Each dispatch is still recorded, and still chargeable.
Selective standing instruction
A rule rather than a decision: forward the things that matter, hold the rest. For example, forward anything signed for and hold ordinary post for collection.
Hold instead
Not everything should travel. An item can simply stay recorded and held, visible in your account, until you decide. Choosing not to forward costs nothing.

From your instruction to dispatch

Five stages. The order matters: the quote comes before the dispatch, never after it.

  1. 1

    You choose the item

From the item in your client account you ask for it to be forwarded. You can also leave a standing instruction so that everything is forwarded without being asked for each time.

  2. 2

    You give the destination

A forwarding address in Singapore or overseas. You can hold more than one and choose between them, and you can change them whenever you wish.

  3. 3

    The item is checked

The item is checked against the destination before anything is packed. Some things cannot travel to some places — by law or by carrier restriction — and it is better to find that out here than at a border.

  4. 4

You are quoted, then you confirm

Forwarding is chargeable. The amount depends on the destination, the carrier and the item, so it is quoted to you before dispatch rather than assumed. Nothing leaves the premises until you have accepted the quote.

  5. 5

    It is dispatched and recorded

The item is sent by the carrier and service appropriate to it. Where the carrier provides tracking, the reference is recorded against the item in your account alongside the date it was sent.

Local and overseas destinations

Both are ordinary. The differences are practical rather than procedural — the same instruction, a different carrier, and a good deal more variability once the item has left the country.

Timing, tracking and what we will not promise

Once an item is handed to a carrier, how quickly it arrives is the carrier’s business and the destination’s. Customs can add days to an overseas dispatch for reasons that have nothing to do with the sender. We therefore record what we can actually stand behind: the date the item was dispatched, the address it was sent to, and the tracking reference where the carrier provides one.

If an item is time-critical — a court document, a signed original, anything with a deadline on it — collection in person is usually the better choice, and we will say so rather than take the forwarding fee.

How forwarding is charged

Forwarding is a chargeable service. It has to be: an item that travels costs postage or courier carriage, and that cost depends on where it is going, how it is going and what it is.

So the amount is not a single published figure. It is quoted to you for the dispatch in front of you, before the item leaves the premises, and nothing is sent until you have accepted it. There is no charge for choosing not to forward something.

No forwarding price appears anywhere on this site. Pricing has not been finalised, and publishing a figure we have not confirmed would be worse than publishing none. Charges will be set out in writing before the service opens, and quoted per dispatch thereafter.

Common questions

What is mail forwarding?
The onward dispatch of an item that has already been received and recorded at your Singapore address, to a different address that you nominate. The item is not redirected before it reaches us; it arrives, it is logged and notified, and then it travels on at your instruction.
Can mail be forwarded outside Singapore?
Yes. A forwarding address can be in Singapore or overseas, and you can hold more than one and choose between them. Overseas dispatch is subject to the destination country’s import rules and to the carrier’s own restrictions.
How much does forwarding cost?
Forwarding is chargeable, and no price is published on this site. The amount depends on the destination, the carrier and the item, so it is quoted to you before anything is dispatched, and nothing is sent until you accept the quote.
How long does forwarding take?
Once an item leaves the premises the timing belongs to the carrier and the destination, so we do not promise an arrival date. What we record is the date of dispatch and, where the carrier provides one, the tracking reference.
Is there anything that cannot be forwarded?
Yes. Some items cannot be sent to some destinations, whether because of the law or because of a carrier restriction, and some documents are better handed over than posted. Where an item cannot be forwarded you are told why, and it is held for collection instead.
Can I change my forwarding address later?
Yes. Forwarding destinations are yours to add, change or remove, and a change applies to items dispatched after it is made. Each dispatch records the address it was sent to, so the history stays accurate.
